On May 20, 2015, Members of the European Parliament voted to overturn the Commission's proposal and the one adopted by the International Trade Committee, requesting mandatory compliance for all EU importers sourcing in conflict-affected and high risk areas. Furthermore, the 880,000 potentially affected EU downstream companies using the 3TG (Tungsten, Tantalum, Tin, and Gold) in manufacturing consumer products will be obliged to provide information on the steps they take to identify and address risks in their 3TG supply chains.
What's next? The European Parliament will now enter into informal talks with the EU member states to seek agreement on the final version of the law. The legislation is part of a co-decision process and also has to be approved by the European Concil, which consists of representatives of the EU governments.
