The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has added N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide to its Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHC), which now totals 224 entries. This newly listed substance is classified as both carcinogenic and mutagenic and is commonly used in polymers, as well as in the production of other chemicals, textiles, leather, and coatings.
If this substance is later placed on the Authorisation List, companies will require EU authorisation for its continued use. Under REACH regulations, companies must inform customers about safe handling if their products contain Candidate List substances above 0.1% by weight. Importers and producers are also required to notify ECHA within six months of listing, and suppliers must update safety data sheets.
