What is Conflict Minerals Compliance?

 

Section 1502 of the US Dodd–Frank Act requires companies to disclose annually the origin of certain raw materials (gold, tin, tungsten, and tantalum) in their products. From a legal perspective, only companies which are publicly traded in the USA under the supervision of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) must comply with this legislation.

 

However, since these companies pass on the reporting obligations through their global supply chains in order to trace back the origin of minerals, the law has a significant international impact. Other countries and politico-economic unions are preparing similar regulations.

 

There are many intermediate steps between the extraction of raw materials and completion of the final product. This makes tracking the origin of raw materials like gold, tin, tungsten, and tantalum extremely difficult. One of the biggest challenges is gaining quick and consistent access to Conflict Minerals-related data across the whole supply chain.

 

Furthermore, each company is faced with a large amount of customer inquiries, which need to be managed, answered, and sent back in an aggregated form. For most companies, manual data management is not a feasible solution, and no company can afford to ignore the related inefficiencies and potential for errors.
